New record: 80.4 MPG

I recently set a new MPG record on the test loop that I run. This loop starts at my driveway, runs between 8 and 9 miles through suburban roads and ends right where I started. In this case the battery was highly charged when I left and had a midpoint charge when I returned, which does factor into the high mileage figure. However, this effect is somewhat diminished over the time and length of the route.

I've been looking forward for some time to breaking 80 MPG. And guess what, I believe there may be a little more MPG in there still! Which means that this may not be the highest figure that I can attain.

How are your figures? If you have some mileage numbers to share, please feel free to post 'em.

  1. I have recently been getting 50 to 54 mpg going to and from work (about 22 miles). I only have ~1,700 miles on the vehicle. I was informed that the mileage will get better once the vehicle has at least 5,000 miles on it.

  2. To be able to get that high a figure on a trip that long, consistently and in traffic is impressive. What type of driving, suburban or city? I would guess that it isn't highway or much highway.

  3. City driving but there is a "highway" type driving though. There is a ~5 to 6 mile section that is 40 mph and only one light. That road is located in a flood plane, and this time of the year it is closed more than it is open. So, I have had to use an alternate route that has more lights / stops which I think is helping to get the better mileage (all city).

  4. Wow, those are some kick ass numbers. I've had the odd high mileage trip but what do you guys have for long term numbers? I've been a bit dissapointed lately with my numbers. I regularily get only 32-38 MPG with my car while trying to keep off the gas all I can. I have wondered if something might actually be wrong with my Fusion. I'm at about 2000 Miles now but haven't seen improvement.

  5. 32-38 does not sound right to me, especially if you are trying to get high mileage. The worst mileage I've ever gotten is 37 on a long highway run in which I cruised at 70.

At the same time, don't compare everyday results to the 80.4 figure. That was achieved on an ideal loop which has very little traffic and you can really milk the car for all the mileage it can give.

I'll give you some other figures. I regularly do a 40 mile run in and out of the city, so I have about half highway, half city, and I get 45 - 47 on that run. And I'm not doing anything unusual just trying to keep the battery going. Lots of traffic on that route.

On a suburban run, about 25 miles, I recently got 59.9. Would have been better if there wasn't so much traffic. Pretty good though.

I would go see the dealer, you should be getting better. If you do, let us know what they say.

  6. Mine has 5600 miles on it. Overall getting 41.7. Usually around town 45-65. On ocassion up to 74. On the higway high 30's to low 40's.
Around town I found that get up to the speed limit and then just back off the accelerator a tad until the electric kicks in.

A recent problem I had a couple of times was that the instant mpg readout stayed on zero and the needle guages bounced around sporadically. On the second time it happen I was able to take it to the dealer and have the service manager go for a ride so that he saw it.
He was going to check with Ford's "hot line" as this was new to him. Have not heard back yet on a possible fix.

  7. Steve,
This pretty much directly parallels my experience with the mpg. I haven't had anything similar to the gauge malfunctions however. Thankfully. Let us know what you find out.

Last week however something strange happened. I got into the car and the gauges had reset to a lower information setting (I don't recall which one actually). That got my attention.

Also my cell was no longer synced up.

I reset the gauges to the highest info setting and tried resyncing the phone. Phone wouldn't resynch on first try so I just put it off and figured I'd get around to it later. After a couple of days it somehow became synced again by itself. Problem solved by procrastination!

  8. Richard,

Talked to Ford Service Dept today. They said that their "hot line" people had not heard of the problem from other owners. All they said is that when I bring it in for an oil change they will again write up the problem, have tech put a scope on it to see what can be found. Only thing is is that the problem will have to be happening when I bring it in. I think I will try and contact these hot line people myself, maybe via another dealer. So far no problem in the past three weeks.

The book explains a Master Reset proceedure. Have not tried that. Service Dept did not think that would do anything. I mean this whole car is one big computer.

I think that this whole thing is new to Ford and that they do not have all the answers. But overall I think it is great and fun to drive. By the way, mine has the navigation screen. Do not know if that means anything one way or the other. Anyway, I'm rambling. I'll continue the hunt for more info.

  9. Steve,

I'd going to describe your experience with this mysterious problem in a blog post in the next day or so. I'll paraphrase what you have written. We're getting a little community going here and it would be great to feature this so that others are alerted to it. Also someone else may have had a similar problem and has an answer.

I like what you said about the car being one big computer. Well stated.

I'm also going to do a post about effects on MPG now that the temps are dropping in many parts of the country.

  10. Richard,

That's OK with me. I probably would have tried to do that but not all that computer savy. Really can not remember how I found this Hypermiler site. Have a Mac at the house and the car is a PC. Maybe I am being punished. HA

When all this strange thing happened with the readout I had the dash set to Enlighten I think. The needles that I mention acting eratically were the ACC, PWR, and MPG. The numeral mpg stayed at 00.0. The speedometer and temp guage were ok.

It corrected it self after the car was turned off and back on (at one time taking two tries at this).

All ok since the 2nd week of Nov.

  11. I have a Mac in the home too and the car is a PC! Never thought of it that way!

It sounds like you probably rebooted the car actually. This is worth posting, especially after my dash reverted last week to a different setting. Maybe someone else will comment. I'll get something up today or tomorrow.

  12. Okay thanks for the feedback guys. Now I"m definitely taking mine in. Mileage has now slipped to 33.1 MPG overall. I am honestly not driving aggressively or doing excessive hill driving or that sort of thing. Car probably does about 50% time on the highway and 50% on city street. It is a Canadian version not that that should make any difference. I mostly run in litres/100 Kms which is now at 7.1/100km which by changing the gauges from metric to imperial gives me the lousy 33.1. I would love to be in the low 40s as an overall, glad to know that's at least possible.

  13. Definitely something amiss there. Even if you wanted to drive aggressively I'm not sure how you could even get it that low if you did. Let us know what Ford says, this is intriguing and should be solvable.

  14. Steve, just elevated your comment to a new post. Check it out. If you have anything to add let me know. Thanks for this post, could be very helpful to some of us. I would freak if this happened to my gauges.

  15. Regarding mpg. I filled up on 2 Dec. Overall mpg was 41.7. Now down to 41.1. I am assuming that it is because of Calif. reformulated winter gas.
The trip mpg remains fairly high but it is not bringing up the overall mpg.
Well, we will see what happens after a tank.
